Depending on need, individual writers will be assigned to specific beats within each service. Write three to five stories per week. Database Editor

Identify, acquire, and manage new databases with high reader value and/or news reporting potential. Expand functionality and usability of existing databases. Develop and manage an array of databases for both end-user and in-house use. Research and acquire data from military, government, industry, and private sources. Improve our use of existing databases such as our military installation and recreation guides. This position also serves as the contact for database data quality issues and is expected to work with both users and technical staff to identify, document and resolve these issues. At least two years experience importing, merging, and managing large databases of more than 100,000 records; searching using relational and hierarchical queries; developing programs, modules and macros to manipulate data within databases; developing custom utilities and web interfaces to data that enhance functionality and facilitate database management.
Skilled in Access or similar database managers. Excel experience helpful, SQL database experience a plus. College degree preferred.

Assistant Managing Editor/Interactive

Working with the Managing Editor/Shared Services, oversee execution of editorial online products and projects, from ensuring that content is posted for web delivery, to creating informative and interactive graphics, calculators and widgets for digital editorial products and helping to inspire user-generated content. Act as liaison with Digital Department on efforts to develop new sites, blogs, calculators, apps, widgets and content modules that highlight and expand upon our unique reporting capabilities. Stay current on social media trends and Web technology in order to target content delivery accordingly. Coordinate with fellow AMEs in the department to identify cross-training opportunities that both challenge staff and expand the department’s ability to efficiently meet newsroom demands. Must have 10 years combined journalism/design/illustration/photojournalism/new media experience, preferably covering military and defense.

Front-End Technical Producer

Must be an interactive journalist, capable of organizing a variety of content into story packages for our online readership. Multimedia Journalist – V.I.C.E.

Experienced multimedia journalist, skilled in producing Web and Video features. Must have a track record of conceiving and producing special Web projects, with an emphasis on combining text graphics and photos. Should be skilled in Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS and PHP. Must also be able to help maintain social media activities on our Web sites as well as discussion boards. Demonstrated ability to produce original video stories for the Web. Requires excellent writing and narration skills for short-format (average: 2 minutes) online videos covering the military, federal government and other agencies and individuals, as assigned. Good shooting and video-editing skills are essential. Fluency in Adobe Premiere and the ability to shoot on a variety of cameras is a must. Should also have strong organizational and time-management skills and solid news judgment to complete multiple projects a week. Must also have the ability to maintain relationships with sources to cultivate original stories. Minimum two years experience. Past government or military experience a plus but not necessary.

Responsibilities
• Improve the ease and effectiveness of digital interfaces through writing and refining HTML, CSS and JavaScript/jQuery.
• Make sure interfaces look good and work as designed across different screens and devices, including desktop-, smartphone- and tablet-optimized formats.
• Integrate code with Gannett’s enterprise publishing tools and platforms, and various third-party solutions licensed from partners.
• Develop user-interface features such as navigation, dynamic content display, user sign-in and subscribe, and social interactions.
• Iterate existing products based on usage data and business needs.
Skills and Experience
• We are looking for candidates who have already developed a strong portfolio, preferably from a year or more of experience at a media company.
• We will consider those just out of college, with a portfolio of project work from internships or large academic projects.
• We’ll expect you to be fluent in presentation languages, including HTML/HTML5, CSS and JavaScript/jQuery, with some experience implementing APIs and working with Content Management Systems (CMS).
• The news business is fast-paced and exacting, so being able to think fast and get stuff done right the first time is vital to success.
